A hotel employee in the northern Yen Bai Province has tested positive for the coronavirus after making contact with a group of Indian experts quarantined at the hotel.
The 63-year-old man made contact with the group as they came to the Nhu Nguyet 2 hotel on April 18. He has been quarantined since.
After testing positive, he was transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi. Further tests are being done by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology for confirmation.
Among the group of 11 Indian experts who came to the hotel, four have been confirmed as Covid-19 cases.
Vietnam has not recorded any new Covid-19 community transmission for more than a month. The total coronavirus tally is at 2,852.
India has seen a recent surge of coronavirus cases that has put immense pressure on its healthcare system. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi admitted the "storm" of infections had shaken India as the country set a new global record of the most number of Covid-19 infections in a day. The number of cases in India surged by 349,691 in the past 24 hours, the fourth straight day of record peaks, Reuters reported.
Hospitals in Delhi and across the country are turning away patients after running out of medical oxygen and beds. As of Monday, the country of 1.3 billion people has recorded a total of 16.96 million infections and 192,311 coronavirus deaths, after 2,767 more died overnight, health ministry data showed.
